Best Soccer Goals

MARADONNA GOALThe Best of the Best in Football GOAL, GOL!

There have been so many great moments in the game of soccer (or football, depending on where you’re from) in which certain goals for the sport’s aficionados become not only a piece of a history but true art (a mix of skill and grace). Who scored the best goals of all time? That’s up for debate among certain circles, but here are some of the highlights throughout the sport’s modern history (not in any particular order):

• Argentina’s Diego Maradona’s weaving, solo run against England in the 1986 World Cup quarterfinals; and again his goal during the semi-finals against Belgium

• Dutch footballer Marco van Basten’s volley in the 1988 European Championship final

• Real Madrid’s Zinedine Zidane’s decisive goal against Bayer Leverkusen in 2002

• Brazil’s Pele’s goal against Sweden in the World Cup final in 1958

• Brazil’s last goal in the 1970 World Cup final against Italy, finished off by Carlos Alberto Pereira

• Hungarian Ferenc Puskas’ goal against England in a friendly match in 1953

• FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi against fellow Spanish team Getafe in the semi-final leg of the Spanish Cup in 2007

• Saudi Arabia’s Saeed Owairan’s goal against Belgium in the first round in the 1994 World Cup

• Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 30-yard bicycle kick in a friendly match against England’s national team in November 2012

Also for many topping the list of great goals are: West German player Helmut Rahn in 1954 during the World Cup final; West German player Gerd Muller against England in the 1970 World Cup quarter; Manchester United’s George Best against fellow FA team Sheffield in 1970; Italy’s Roberto Baggio against Czechoslovakia during the first round in the 1970 World Cup; England’s Michael Owen against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup (second round); and FC Barcelona’s Rivaldo against Valencia in the Spanish League in 2000.
